Biodiversity in Food Award

Are you pioneering sustainable sourcing practices in your product?

The Union for Ethical BioTrade’s Biodiversity in Food Awards are now open. The awards, launched in partnership with United Business Media (UBM), aim to recognize the efforts of companies to promote the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) throughout their supply chain.

The CBD objectives are: biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity, and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from its use.

Companies active in the food sector are invited to apply to either the innovation or the leadership award. The leadership award will be given to a company promoting sustainable practices and respect for biodiversity in a way that will influence other businesses to adopt similar practices. The innovation award will go to a product created in a sustainable way, with respect for the environment and surrounding biodiversity.

Last year's winners

In 2010, the leadership award was given to retailer Coop Switzerland for its commitment to regional produce, rare species and its support to organic farmers. The jury also applauded the Coop’s creative public awareness campaigns to bring biodiversity closer to the consumer.

The innovation award was given to Unilever for its Allanblackia project. The company was recognised for its work with rural producers and local biodiversity in Africa in the development of this new vegetable oil, in addition to a commitment to small scale farming systems.
