Trading members need to adhere to the Ethical BioTrade Verification Framework. This framework guides members towards compliance with the Principles and Criteria of Ethical BioTrade.
The Union’s verification system monitors members’ respect for their membership obligations such as the fulfilment of minimal requirements, or the adherence to work-plans aiming to achieve compliance with the Principles and Criteria of Ethical BioTrade.
The Union applies the term critical path for the route that members travel to get into compliance with the Principles and Criteria of Ethical BioTrade.
Once members comply with the Union’s verification framework membership of the Union will be conditional upon continuous compliance with the Verification Framework. A third party audit should verify this on-going compliance every 3 years, while the organization will self-report annually in the intervening years.
Members will also be expected to show continuous improvement, which they will be able to measure using a set of impact indicators developed by the Union and the BioTrade Initiative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
