UEBT's Standard stems from the seven Principles and Criteria as developed by the UNCTAD BioTrade initiative.

The Ethical BioTrade standard is the tool used to analyse how a Trading Member sources natural ingredients derived from biodiversity. This analysis helps members to develop management systems that allow them to continually improve their sourcing practices and move towards the ‘Sourcing with Respect’ of biodiversity-based products.

Please note that the standard is under revision. These guidance documents refer to the original 2007 version of the standard. They will be updated when a new version of the standard is officially approved.

Standardisation procedure

The Union for Ethical BioTrade is a full member of ISEAL Alliance, the global association for social and environmental standards systems, and the Ethical BioTrade Standard has been designed in accordance with its requirements as well as those of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
