About Weleda

Weleda is a world-renowned brand of beauty products and naturopathic medicines. It is headquartered in Switzerland and represented in over 50 countries on all five continents. Weleda relies on almost 1,000 natural raw materials in the production  of hundreds of natural cosmetics and thousands of pharmaceuticals, still partly sourcing medicinal plants from its own gardens. Promoting and preserving biodiversity and ecosystem services has been important for Weleda since the Company was established in 1921. About 78 percent of the raw materials they use, come from organic or biodynamic farming and from controlled wild collection.

Weleda and UEBT fruitful partnership

Weleda has been a full member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) since 2011 and since 2015 the President of the UEBT Board has been Bas Schneiders, Head of International Strategic Sourcing & Corporate Sustainability at Weleda. With that membership Weleda reaffirmed principles of ethical business practice and undertook to apply the UEBT Standard in the procurement of raw materials. Together UEBT and Weleda ensure socially fair procurement practices and help shape the future of biodiversity

CSR Award of the German Federal Government In early 2017 we received the special award for “Responsible Supply Chain Management”, the first time this prize has ever been awarded. Here, too, the jury was convinced by Weleda’s entire supply chain for natural raw materials being guided by the standard of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT). The UEBT standard ensures that environmental and social criteria are taken into account in the supply chain and is a key consideration for us when we implement sustainability criteria in the procurement of raw materials. The jury was impressed by the individual approach Weleda takes regarding country and situation-specific problems in the supply chain, taking account of the local infrastructure and living conditions. The CSR Award honours outstanding examples of social responsibility that set an example for others to follow.

Swiss Ethics Award The Swiss Ethics Award of the Swiss Excellence Forum honours outstanding achievements in the field of ethics by organisations and companies who have gone the extra mile to assume responsibility and who are committed to sustainable corporate management. Weleda received the 2016 award for its project “Ethically sourcing natural raw materials”. From the jury’s citation: “Weleda is the first and so far only Swiss company to implement the social and environmental criteria based on the standard set out by the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT). And the Company did so not merely for just one raw material but for all of the raw materials that it uses – more than one thousand in total.”

Since 2010, we have stepped up our efforts for the protection of biodiversity and to enhance fair trade directly in our supply chain. We implement the social and environmental criteria of the UEBT and undertake to promote biodiversity, recognise traditional knowledge and pay a fair wage to all partners within the supply chain
