Our aims

We aim at transforming the way business is done and make a difference on a global scale

Transforming markets

By supporting and validating best practices among our member companies, and by working toward more market recognition for ethically sourced products, the UEBT is promoting change. We aim at contributing to a larger process of market transformation in the cosmetics, food and natural pharmaceutical sectors. The UEBT also seeks to raise awareness on the importance of ethical sourcing of biodiversity beyond its membership by carrying out sector-specific outreach like its annual Beauty of Sourcing with Respect conference and its Biodiversity Barometer.

WE help companies

gain recognition

for their efforts to respect people and biodiversity

The UEBT was born specifically out of the recognition that additional efforts were needed to engage the private sector with BioTrade practices. It also responded to the need, particularly expressed by small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries, for ways to differentiate ethical sourcing practices in the market and in doing so gain better market prices and consumer support.

UEBT works towards offering increased market recognition for Ethical BioTrade efforts of its members through for instance its partnership with UTZ on herbal tea program (learn more on certifications).

Raising biodiversity awareness within the sector

We put biodiversity center stage

UEBT intends to put biodiversity forward on the corporate agenda and to raise business awareness on the subject by organizing each year its annual Beauty of Sourcing with Respect (BSR) conference in Paris. This conference has been drawing increasing attention from the private and public sectors reaching 180 participants in 2017 for its ninth edition. The BSR brings together leading companies in the cosmetics, food and natural pharmaceutical sectors, as well as experts, governments, international organisations, and other associations, to exchange experiences and debate key issues on the ethical sourcing of biodiversity. With this conference gathering multi-stakeholders, UEBT and its members gain in visibility thereby enhancing their impact on protecting biodiversity.

Reporting on consumers expectations: Biodiversity Barometer

The UEBT Biodiversity Barometer, our flagship consumer report, tracks biodiversity awareness around the work. Since 2009, UEBT assessed awareness of biodiversity, and interest in ethical sourcing, in 16 different countries. Nine years of research among 59'000 people, and hundreds of leading companies has provided valuable insights that may guide people, companies and governments in their approaches towards people and biodiversity. The UEBT Biodiversity Barometer is one also one of the instruments used to track progress Target 1 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which seeks to ensure that by 2020 ‘people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably’.
