Who are they?
The National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y el Uso de la Biodiversidad, CONABIO) is a permanent inter-ministerial commission of the Federal Mexican government, created in 1992. The mission of CONABIO is to promote, coordinate, support and carry out activities aimed at increasing awareness of biodiversity and its conservation and sustainable use for the benefit of society within Mexico and the surrounding regions.
UEBT/CONABIO joint project
In the context of CONABIO's ‘Sustainable production system and biodiversity project' the Mexican government supported several local projects using biological resources. In 2015, the need was felt to measure the compliance of those projects with sustainability criteria. At this end, a group was formed in order to build an evaluation tool, called “Herramienta de Verificación de Criterios de Sustentabilidad en Proyectos Productivos’ (HVCSPP)”. The group was composed of professionals from CONABIO, The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Comisión Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas, CONANP), GIZ, EcoValor and COBIO-CESMO program, with the technical support of the UEBT. The project is still on-going.
