Raising awareness in the sector: UEBT conferences

Beauty of Sourcing with Respect 2017 explored biodiversity as a crucial source of innovation and inspiration

UEBT intends to put biodiversity forward on the corporate agenda and to raise business awareness on the subject by organizing each year its annual Beauty of Sourcing with Respect (BSR) conference in Paris. This conference has been drawing increasing attention from the private and public sectors reaching 180 participants in 2017 for its ninth edition. The BSR brings together leading companies in the cosmetics, food and natural pharmaceutical sectors, as well as experts from governments, international organisations, and other associations, to exchange experiences and debate key issues on the ethical sourcing of biodiversity.

In addition, UEBT also organizes a forum in Brazil focusing on ethical sourcing practices and issues in this particular biodiverse country. With these conferences gathering multi-stakeholders, UEBT and its members gain in visibility thereby enhancing their impact on protecting biodiversity.

Reporting on consumers expectations: UEBT Biodiversity Barometer

The UEBT Biodiversity Barometer, UEBT's flagship consumer report, tracks biodiversity awareness around the world each year. Since 2009, UEBT assessed awareness of biodiversity, and interest in ethical sourcing, in 16 different countries. Nine years of research among 59'000 people, and hundreds of leading companies has provided valuable insights that may guide people, companies and governments in their approaches towards people and biodiversity. The barometer also draws on reviews of the annual reports of the 100 biggest beauty companies, as well as interviews with industry professionals.

Finally, the UEBT Biodiversity Barometer is one of the instruments used to track progress in "Target 1' of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which seeks to ensure that by 2020 ‘people are aware of the values of biodiversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably’.
